Gaza and Sudan experienced the worst famines. Central African Republic, Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, and Haiti also suffered famines in 2024. Specific fatalities due to starvation are unknown, however an estimated 295 million faced malnutrition. The price of gasoline steadily increased due to international conflicts and diplomatic issues. Many refineries in the Ukraine-Russian war were bombed and this hampered trade of oil. Iran bombed a select few parts of Israel, which stalled Israeli exports. Kuwait has also suffered refinery bombings continuously since 2023. In March 2024 the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Maryland was hit by a container ship. 6 crewman died and this caused the port to be temporarily closed for 11 weeks. This was at a loss of $15 million a day and $1.6-1.9 billion to replace the bridge. Prejudice against illegal immigrants continued to surge and many called for ICE raids. 2 of Haiti’s largest prisons were attacked by rebel groups operated by Jimmy Chérizier. 4,700 inmates escaped and they targeted the international airport, preventing the prime minister, Ariel Henry, from entering the country. Other places were ransacked including the Institute of Social Welfare. Gunmen in Moscow were responsible for at least 137 deaths in a concert hall. The Afghan ISIS group took credit for the attack with intention of killing Christians. However, Putin claimed Ukraine was involved and that the men were going to escape through the border. US intel also warned the Russian officials; they waved away the concern. Putin won the election in 2024 with 88% of the vote, this is his fifth term. A Boeing 737 crashed in South Korea killing 179, this follows many whistleblower complaints and other less deadly aviation accidents.
