Dupont

Dupont has committed many environmental and health-related atrocities. From the 1960’s to 2015, DuPont operated a chloroprene factory that contributed to Cancer Alley. Rates of cancer near this factory are 700 times the national average. They are currently ranked as the fourth largest air polluter in the US. In 2010, one facility discharged 5,000,000 pounds of toxic materials into New Jersey and Delaware waterways. The New Jersey government sued for damages. They settled in 2025 for $2 billion and agreed to clean the water. The line “they can’t hear you scream” is likely a reference to the 4 employees who died of suffocation after a chemical leak. This leak was also linked to a die-off of birds in the nearby area due to the air pollution it caused. They are even on the severe violator’s program for incredibly unsafe working conditions. PFOAs and/or C8 are chemicals that are used in factories, mainly to run machinery. These chemicals, when drunk in contaminated water, can cause cancer, pre-eclampsia, and colon ulcers. They are known as “forever chemicals” due to their being non-biodegradable. Despite ceasing the usage of C8 in 2013, DuPont is still settling over 3,550 civil cases claiming health issues. PFOs, a related chemical, are also linked to preterm labour. DuPont was one of many companies part of the Global Climate Coalition, a group dedicated to claiming that climate change was not real. Despite this, they pride themselves on being an “environmentally conscious” company. A spokesperson for DuPont claimed they never used PFOs and called the claims “meritless.”
